Kerala · 3 families · 6 adults, 7 kids (6–13) · 17–25 Oct 2026

Kerala — the options

Not a plan, a menu. Every place below is worth considering for a week with seven kids: wild animals, boats, beaches, shows and hands-on things, plus the areas to sleep in and stays big enough for 13. Mark what you like; the route comes after.

Ratings, map links and photos are from Google Places via tools/gmaps.py, checked 2026-10-03; photos are credited to their authors. Drive times are Google's live figures from Saturday-evening traffic, so treat them as the slow end. Prices are from listings, not quotes for these dates.

The areas

Where things are. Plan on 2–3 of these as places to sleep; the rest are day trips or skipped. Kerala is small on the map but slow on the road: hill drives are 3.5–5.5 hours.

Kochi (Fort Kochi)

The old harbour town: Kathakali, the synagogue, the fishing nets, boats across the harbour, Cherai beach up the coast. Flat, walkable, a bit of a city.

50 min from Ernakulam station · 2h to Alleppey

Munnar

Tea hills at 1,500 m: wild tahr at Eravikulam, waterfalls, sunrise jeeps, cool nights. The most dramatic scenery, and the busiest during the Dussehra holiday.

≈4h from Aluva station (where the train arrives) · 3.5h to Thekkady · 5.5h to Alleppey

Thekkady (Periyar)

A forest town on the edge of the tiger reserve: the lake boat with wild elephants, spice gardens, kalari shows. Small and easy.

3.5h from Munnar · 4h+ to Alleppey

Alleppey backwaters

Canals, rice paddies and lagoons: houseboats, kayaks, ferries and island homestays. The image of Kerala.

2h from Fort Kochi · 35 min to Marari

Marari

A long, quiet fishing-village beach 35 minutes from the backwaters. The easy base for beach days and the last nights.

1.5h from Ernakulam station · 2h40 to Kochi airport

Vagamon

Open grass hills and pine forest between Thekkady and the backwaters. A stopover on that drive rather than a base.

1h50 from Kumily (Thekkady) · 4h from Munnar

Athirappilly

Kerala's biggest waterfall, in forest an hour inland. A stop on the way in or out, not really a base.

1.5h from Kochi airport · 4.5h to Munnar

The Nilgiri tahr is a rare wild mountain goat, and here it's tame enough to walk past you on the road. A park bus takes you up to grassland, cliffs and tea views. Book tickets online; around the Dussehra holiday (18–21 Oct) the queues are long. In fog you may see nothing, so go early.

Lake boat · Thekkady

Kids' pickBig sight

A 90-minute boat on the reservoir inside the tiger reserve. You usually see wild elephants, bison and deer on the shore, though nothing is guaranteed. Take the first boat (07:30); the animals are out and the light is best. The forest walks and bamboo rafting are ages 12+ only, so that's a split activity for the older kids and some of the adults. Leeches on any forest walk.

Kids' pickSmall & local

Dry, rocky forest on the far side of the hills from Munnar, with giant grizzled squirrels, a treehouse trail and a river. Far fewer people than Eravikulam. The catch: a long drive past Marayoor (time not verified), so it’s a full day.

Boats & backwaters

The backwaters are why people come to Kerala. You don't need a houseboat night to see them: smaller boats get into the narrow canals that houseboats can't.

Big sightKids' pick

The famous thing. A day cruise (about 11:00–17:00, lunch cooked on board) rather than an overnight one: overnight boats moor at dusk, which is peak mosquito time, and the day version is roughly half the price. For 13 people: one 4–5-bedroom boat or two 3-bedroom boats. An overnight 3-bedroom is about ₹15–26k with meals; ask for an all-vegetarian menu. Each boat has to be vetted on its own (Google rates the lake, not the boats).

Kids' adventure park · Munnar

NewKids' pick

Small adventure/amusement park with trampolines, slides and low rides, 2–3h, about 7 km from Anna Homestay. Reviews say some rides are tired. Useful as a rainy-day half day for the younger kids, not a destination.

NewKids' pick

Sky cycling, zipline and other rides; paragliding is 12–16+ only and ₹3,000–4,500. 09:00–17:30. ⚠️ The glass bridge has been closed indefinitely since Dec 2025 (Google reviews), and fog regularly stops activities.

Where to stay — places that fit 13

Two price points per area. Size is the hard constraint: most guesthouses have 4–6 rooms, so these are mostly places you can take over whole. ⚠️ Pools are chlorinated at unknown strength; Yali does better in the sea.

Kochi

Two nights here works if you want the town side: Kathakali, the synagogue, the fishing nets, the Water Metro.

Practical

Getting there: overnight train

12618 Mangala Lakshadweep, daily: Madgaon 18:00 → Aluva 06:58 (for Munnar) / Ernakulam 08:00. Backup: 12218 Sampark Kranti (Thu, Sat), Madgaon 18:35 → Ernakulam 09:30 / Alappuzha 10:47. AC 3-tier is about ₹1.1–1.3k a berth.

Book now: 3 bookings of up to 6, all at once. It's a festival weekend, and last-minute Tatkal tickets need an Aadhaar (Indian ID) online.

Coming back: 75-minute flight

IndiGo 6E211, the only nonstop Kochi → Goa (Dabolim). Sun 25 Oct 13:20 → 14:35 was the cheapest day, about 170 NIS (₹4–4.5k) a person. IndiGo's website takes 9 people per booking, so split it or ask their group desk. So the last night should be within ~2.5h of Kochi airport.

Getting around: one van with a driver

A 17-seat Tempo Traveller with driver for the week: about ₹32–40k all-in, or ₹11–13k per family. Two cars with drivers would cost ₹55–65k. Ask for rear seatbelts and a driver who knows the Munnar hill roads, and get the price in writing.

Weather: the second monsoon

The northeast monsoon is expected to start in the third week of October. Expect sunny mornings and afternoon thunderstorms, so put the outdoor and water things in the mornings. Munnar is cool (14–24°C) and can be foggy. Leeches in the forest; 🦟 mosquitoes at dusk everywhere.

Not on this page, and why

  • Elephant Junction (Thekkady), Carmelagiri Elephant Park (Munnar): elephant rides and “bathing” with captive elephants.
  • Abhayaranyam (the former Kodanad elephant training centre): captive ex-working elephants; ethics unclear.
  • Guruvayur Punnathur Kotta: chained temple elephants.
  • Tata Tea Museum, Thattekad bird sanctuary, Kumarakom bird sanctuary: rated below 4.0 on Google.
  • Varkala and Kovalam: lovely beaches, but 4–5h south of Kochi airport. A separate trip.

Food

Kerala is easy for vegetarians: a sadya (rice with a dozen vegetable dishes on a banana leaf), appam with vegetable stew, dosa, puttu. Homestays and houseboats cook to order, so tell them how many vegetarians are coming when you book.
