Railay, and the last boat

A peninsula with no road in. You arrive by longtail, you leave by longtail, and everything in between is shaped by two clocks: the tide, which decides where you can swim, and the last boat, which decides when the day ends. This sheet is one Saturday — two beaches, one lunch, one coffee, one kayak — plus the six things that look good on a map and don't survive contact with a seven-year-old in the wet season.

Ratings checked 12 Aug 2026 · day trip · home for dinner

If you only read this

  1. Park at Ao Nang, not Ao Nam Mao. Ao Nang lands you on Railay West, a beach you can launch off at any tide. Ao Nam Mao lands you at Railay East pier, which stops working at low water — and low water on Saturday is 18:18, exactly when you want to leave. Five minutes closer, and it removes the whole problem.

  2. Phra Nang is the swim. Kohinoor is the lunch. Truce is the coffee. 4.7★, 4.8★ and 5.0★ respectively, all verified. That's your restaurant, your cafe and your beach answered — and the walk between them is fifteen minutes end to end.

  3. The honest answer to "anywhere else?" is: not much, and that's fine. Add the Princess Cave shrine (free, 5 minutes) and an hour in a kayak (400–600฿). Everything else on the peninsula is either below the ratings floor, genuinely unsafe for Yali in August, or costs the entire weekend budget. All six are listed below with the reason.

The boat — read this before anything else

Railay is a peninsula, not an island, walled off from the road network by 200 m of limestone. There is no drivable route in at any tide, ever. Everything else on this page sits inside these numbers.

The wall here is soft, and that is the important difference from Koh Yao Yai. There is no scheduled sailing to miss — "the last boat" really means "the last time eight people want to leave," and in August low season eight people is not a given. Missing it costs a 1,200–1,500฿ charter, not a night's accommodation. So plan for 16:45, but don't run the day like a ferry deadline.

Do not buy a return ticket. A 200฿ return binds you to a fixed meeting time, typically three hours later, and you must leave then. Two singles at 100฿ cost exactly the same and leave the afternoon open.

The sea decides, and you can see the sea from the car park. The Thai Met Department's 12–18 Aug forecast puts Krabi in the lower Andaman zone — 1–2 m, above 2 m in thundershowers — and the "small boats keep ashore" advisory names the upper Andaman, from Phang Nga north. That is the opposite of the Koh Yao Yai weekend. But 1–2 m is still choppy for a longtail: in rough water or low tide, Ao Nang captains relocate the launch to Nopparat Thara Pier (2–3 km, tuk-tuk transfer included) rather than cancelling. Expect the substitution; it isn't a failure.

One oddity worth knowing: the Ao Nang Longtail Boat Service Club — the co-operative that sells every ticket — is itself rated 3.1★ (1,230). That's a monopoly people resent paying, not a service you're choosing. It doesn't change the plan; it does mean you should expect a queue and a firm price rather than a warm welcome.

The tide and the clock, on one line

Saturday is a spring tide — a 3.2 m swing, big for this coast. Water rises all morning to a 3.77 m high at 11:36, then falls hard to a 0.54 m low at 18:18. Conveniently, the swim window and the boat window are the same window. Tide from tidetime.org, single source and single datum — treat every time as ±45 min.

The Saturday

Two blocks, built backwards from the boat. Nothing here is booked — the only thing with a fixed time on it is the last longtail, and even that is soft.

Leave The Pelican. Repellent, dry bag, cash — Railay is a cash peninsula, only Railay Beach Cafe was reported taking cards.

Ao Nang. Park (50–80฿), tickets at the Boat Service Club booth on the beach. Look at the sea before you pay.

Wait for the boat to fill. Roughly eight passengers; in low season this could be 20 minutes or 40. This is the least verified number on the page.

Land on Railay West. Wet landing — you step into knee-deep water. An adult goes down first and takes Yali.

Block 1 — Railay West, then the cliff path to Phra Nang. Repellent on before the path; monkey rules stated once, before you set off. Water rising to the 11:36 high: this is the swim. Five minutes at Princess Cave on the way in.

Lunch at Kohinoor. Opens 11:00. Real vegetarian curries, naan, and pizza in the same building — out of the midday sun.

Block 2 — back to Railay West on the falling tide. A kayak hour (400–600฿) and a second swim. Coffee at Truce around 15:30 — it shuts at 17:30.

Leave the beach. Boat at 16:30–16:45. This is the one time on the page worth setting an alarm for.

Land Ao Nang.

Home, Klong Muang.

The map

Every pin is a coordinate resolved through the Google Places API on 12–13 Aug 2026 — not read off a blog. The whole peninsula is about a fifteen-minute walk end to end, which the zoom makes hard to believe.

Beach Eat & drink Do Boat, pier, or ruled out Home — Klong Muang

The two pins on the mainland are the whole logistical story. Ao Nang is where you park and launch; Ao Nam Mao is the pier you are deliberately not using on this date. Everything else is inside a fifteen-minute walk of everything else.

The places

Ordered by the shape of the day. Everything here clears the 4.0★ / 15-review floor, and where a review count is thin the card says so rather than hiding it. Railay has enormous review counts — that's a strong signal, and it's an international-tourist signal, which is itself information.

This is the swim, and it isn't close. Highest-rated beach on the peninsula despite having 3,000 fewer reviews than Railay West — wide, sheltered, soft sand, and it keeps its beach at high tide when Railay West narrows to a strip. The karst island a hundred metres offshore is the postcard everyone comes for, and it is genuinely as good as the photograph. Mor's beach, and the kids' whole day.

Princess Cave is two minutes away at the eastern end, free, and worth the five minutes — a fisherman's shrine in a rock overhang, 4.6★ (7,280). Fair warning so it isn't a surprise: it is filled with hundreds of carved wooden phalluses, some waist-high, painted red. The kids will ask. Decide in advance what you're going to say.

Kid fit: the pick of the four beaches. No facilities at all beyond the vendor boats, so bring water.

Macaques on the path, and this is the most likely thing to actually go wrong today. Reviewers: "watch out for monkeys … which often bail you up and/or steal your stuff, especially on the path back to Railay." There is a documented case of a visitor bitten on this beach. State the rules once, before you set off: no visible food, bags closed, no feeding, no eye contact, no chasing. The shy grey dusky leaf monkeys, early and late, are the good encounter — the macaques are the problem.

The arrival, the kayaks and the sunset you won't be here for. Wide fine sand under the cliff, and it earns its fame — which also means it has seven thousand reviews' worth of people on it in the middle of the day. It works at every tide, unlike everywhere else on this peninsula, which is the entire reason you're launching from Ao Nang.

The kayak hour is the best value on Railay. Two boats for an hour is 400–600฿, there's no operator, no booking and no schedule, and you can give up after forty minutes. Water plus hands-on in one purchase — the only thing on the peninsula that hits the "making and doing" category without costing the whole weekend budget.

Kid fit: yes, with one handover. The wet landing means an adult gets into the water first and takes Yali down off the bow. Phones and cash in a dry bag, both directions.

Keep the kayaks inside the bay. Offshore is 1–2 m, above 2 m in thundershowers, through 17 Aug. Inside Railay bay is far more sheltered than that figure — outside it is not. Nobody swims out past the moored boats.

The highest rating and the deepest review count of any restaurant on the peninsula, which is a rare combination and settles the question. But the reason it wins for you specifically is structural, not culinary: an Indian kitchen has no fish sauce in it. On a Thai menu, four vegetarians are ordering around the dishes; here they are ordering off the menu. Same logic that made the Lebanese place the answer on Koh Yao Yai.

What's actually vegetarian: paneer masala (a reviewer: "the paneer was so soft"), dal, chana, vegetable curries, garlic naan, pilau rice, sweet and salted lassi. And it does pizza — the non-Thai release valve for a seven-year-old, in the same building. That combination exists nowhere else on Railay. Unverified: whether veg dishes get separate pans. Ask.

Railay is a captive market and every source says so in its own words. Reviewers, quoted: "of course overpriced compared to regular Thai food" · "prices range between 200 to 400 baht for most things which are a little bit pricier than usual." Budget 200–300฿ a dish against 80–150฿ for the equivalent at home. The mitigation isn't finding a cheap restaurant — it's eating one meal here, not two.

Three separate reviewers, quoted: "probably the best coffee I've had in Thailand so far — worth the trip to Railay" · "ordered an oat milk flat white … the best I've had so far at Railay beach" · "they have a variety of beans, the atmosphere is nice and the staff is friendly." Oat milk is on the menu, which is worth knowing and rare here. Go at 15:30, between the kayak and the boat.

Two honest caveats. First: 15 reviews is exactly the floor, and this is not the remote-area exception — Railay is the opposite of remote, so this is a new or very small business rather than a hidden local one. The rating is unanimous and the reviews are recent, but the signal is thin. Second: the shopfront in the photo is signed "Café LÉ Inguz — Railay Coffee." Google resolves the pin to Truce; the sign may not. Navigate by coordinate, not by name.
Nothing on Railay is a verified work cafe. Not one review across any listing here mentions wifi, outlets or laptops. Fine for a Saturday — but don't plan a working day on this peninsula.

The backup, and a good one. Easiest structurally vegetarian menu on the peninsula and the only decent thing open before Kohinoor unlocks at 11:00 — so if the boat fills fast and you land hungry at 09:00, this is where you go. Reviewers: "the açaí bowl was absolutely delicious" · "loved the mango sticky rice" · "super clean, portions were very good, affordable prices."

Veg: açaí bowls, sandwiches, mango sticky rice, and Tom Kha if they'll make it without fish sauce — ask, because normally it isn't. The bowls and sandwiches are the safe ground.

Google resolved this from a search for "Coffee Station Railay" and returned D'oasis cafe' at Railay Beach — a name-differs-from-query match. It's the right pin at the right coordinates, but check the sign on arrival rather than assuming.

Clears the floor, doesn't impress — and the position is the entire case for it. If nobody wants to walk to Railay East at midday, this is the alternative: massaman, pad see ew, fried rice, and 120฿ fruit shakes, twenty metres from where you left your towel. It also takes cards, which almost nothing here does.

Veg: all the Thai standards are present with tofu — but this is not a documented vegetarian kitchen, so it's ordering carefully rather than ordering freely. Say mangsawirat, and "mai sai nam pla, mai sai kapi" — no fish sauce, no shrimp paste. Same phrasebook as Koh Yao Yai.

Railay's actual hands-on anchor, and the best rating-plus-count combination in Krabi. Prices are published on railayadventure.com, checked 12 Aug. On whether it works for a seven-year-old, the strongest evidence available is a reviewer's own account: "we are a climbing family with a 5 year old and climbed for a whole week with Hot Rock. Our guide Bo was calm, confident and encouraging, and best of all he took us to multiple crags with many routes that my son could top." A five-year-old topped routes here. Yali at seven and Romi at nine are comfortably inside that.

Kid fit: the only thing on the peninsula that hits "making and doing" properly. It also runs in the rain — "cancellations only for severe rain."

🛑 And here is the problem: 5,400฿ for one morning is the entire weekend budget, before the boat, the parking or the lunch — it takes the day to roughly 8,200฿ against a 3,000–6,000฿ band. This is exactly the upmarket drift that's meant to get flagged rather than quietly recommended, so: flagged. Three honest ways to have it anyway — (1) split it: one adult plus Romi is 2,700฿ while Mor and Yali do Phra Nang, landing the day at ~5,500–6,100฿, at the ceiling but not over; (2) make it its own weekend with nothing else in it; (3) do it and take the number on the chin, deliberately.

The 4.2★ is people rating the place, not the swimming, and it's worth saying plainly: you do not swim here at any tide. At low water it's exposed mud and mangrove with hulls sitting on wet sand, and the sandbar between East and West becomes a wade. What it genuinely is: the peninsula's high street — Kohinoor, D'oasis, the mini-marts, the climbing shops, and the pier to Ao Nam Mao. That's a real use. Just not the one the word "beach" implies.

This is Yali's mosquito exposure, and Saturday makes it worse. Mangrove, standing water and mudflat — and the 18:18 low puts it at its ugliest right at dusk. Lunch here at midday is fine; sitting here after 17:00 is not. Repellent before the cliff path, and again at 17:00 regardless of what you're doing. Railay West and Phra Nang are open and breezy: low exposure.

Genuinely the most Yonatan thing on this peninsula, and it's being cut anyway. No resorts, cheap food, climbers rather than tour groups. Mama's is 4.6★ (506) and inexpensive, and a reviewer catches the character exactly: "you go to Mama's, you bow to her rules. Her home, her way. This is remote Asia, not fancy resorts — sit back on those plastic chairs and enjoy the street food experience."

The access is the problem, not the beach. From Railay West it's a fifteen-minute rock scramble around the headland at low tide, or a jungle path over the rock at high — described as "a little tricky, but if you are steady on your feet, it's not a problem", in the dry. Wet limestone, a seven-year-old, and a return boat on a clock is the wrong risk for a lunch. The alternative is a separate longtail hop and a second fare. Save it for a dry-day return, on its own.

Recorded because it's the strongest argument for coming back and sleeping here. A reviewer: "we went back just to be able to watch the flying foxes / fruit bats lift from above Princess Lagoon — conservatively, thousands." A thousand fruit bats coming off a cliff at dusk is a proper animals-category hit, the kind Romi and Yali would still be describing in Goa.

And it is unreachable on a day trip. It's dusk, on the mangrove side, at the far end of Railay East — the exact hour and the exact place where Yali should have repellent on and you should be on a boat. Only viable if you sleep on Railay. That's the trade this whole page makes.

"Anywhere else?" — the six that don't survive

These are written down with reasons so they don't get re-researched every time somebody looks at a map of Railay. Four are cut on safety or ratings, two on cost. Between them they're most of what a search for "things to do in Railay" will return.

Ruled outGoogleWhy
Railay Viewpoint 4.7★ (370) Great rating, hard no. The first section is "just 90 metres, but pretty much vertical," climbed on limestone holds and a thick rope. Sources are unanimous — "not recommended for children" · "during heavy rain this climb would be a nightmare, and pretty dangerous too" · "the rope becomes full of dried mud, making it difficult to hold when wet." Wet season, a rope, a mud slope and a seven-year-old. Best season is November–May.
Princess Hidden Lagoon 4.7★ (124) Worse than the viewpoint, not better. "The steepest and most challenging scramble" — two rock walls, a squeeze through a hole, a muddy jungle descent, 1–2 hours. A TripAdvisor review is literally titled "Worth it but really dangerous." Absolute kill. ✅ You can see the lagoon's bats from Tew Lay Bar for the price of a drink instead.
Diamond Cave 3.8★ (1,168) Fails the 4.0 floor across 1,168 reviews — that's a settled verdict, not a thin signal. And it charges 200฿ adult / 100฿ child — 600฿ for the four of you — for a lit concrete boardwalk. The clearest tourist trap on the peninsula.
Four-island / Chicken Island snorkel cost + sea Longtail 750฿ each plus a 400฿ national park fee = 4,600฿ for four (speedboat 5,600฿). Three strikes: it eats the entire band, it's a separate full day rather than an add-on, and it's open water at 1–2 m with "above 2 m in thundershowers." Right idea, wrong day, wrong season.
The Grotto (Rayavadee, on Phra Nang) 3.7★ (688) The famous cave restaurant, and a double fail: below the ratings floor and the most expensive thing on the peninsula (Google price level: very expensive). You'll walk right past it. Keep walking.
Railay Restaurant / Sunset bar 2.1★ (258) Prime Railay West sunset position, catastrophic rating — the textbook captive-market trap. Two neighbours fail with it: Flame Tree 2.9★ (225) and Skunk House 3.4★ (251). On a peninsula where the good places rate 4.7 and 4.8, a 2.1 is a choice somebody made.

The two weakest numbers here

Said out loud, because everything else on this page is verified and these two are not:

  • The fill-and-go wait. "Waits for eight passengers" in August low season could be 15 minutes or 45. The whole door-to-door figure and the leave-by time inherit that uncertainty. First thing to time on the day.
  • The last boat. Sources split 17:30 vs 18:00 and it couldn't be resolved from here. Written as 17:30 because that's the conservative read — but this is not the same quality of fact as Koh Yao Yai's scheduled 15:30 sailing was.

Yali — the two standing filters

Mosquitoes: Railay East is the exposure — mangrove, standing water, mudflat — and the 18:18 low puts it at its worst at dusk. Railay West and Phra Nang are open and breezy. Lunch on the east side at midday: fine. Sitting there at 18:00: no.

Chlorine: a clean win. There is no pool anywhere in this plan. Every drop of water in the day is sea.

Risk, stated once

  • The wet landing, both directions. An adult in the water first, dry bag for phones.
  • Open water 1–2 m offshore. Kayaks stay inside the bay.
  • Macaques on the Phra Nang path — the likeliest thing to go wrong.
  • The viewpoint and the lagoon are cut. If the kids see other people going up the rope, have the conversation ready rather than improvised.

The split, said out loud

This is Mor's day. Marquee beach, famous, easy, no logistics beyond a boat. That's a fair claim on a Saturday and it's the right call.

And it's Yonatan-priced — around 3,000฿ — precisely because everything with a price tag got cut. Two beaches, one lunch, one coffee, one kayak, nothing else. If that reads thin, the fix isn't a fifth thing squeezed into this day: it's Tonsai and Mama's chicken on a dry-day return.

Rain

No plan needed. August is ~231 mm across ~10 rainy days, the water is 29 °C, and you'll already be wet. Kohinoor and D'oasis are both indoors if it turns into a real thunderstorm. The only weather that cancels this trip is the sea — and you can see the sea from the car park before you've paid for anything.
