Northeast India · 3 families · 6 adults, 7 kids (6–13) · alternative to Kerala, 17–25 Oct 2026
The Seven Sisters
Could Northeast India replace Kerala for our week? Here's the background on the seven states, which ones actually work with seven kids in one week (two of them), what we'd do there, and an honest comparison with the Kerala plan.
Researched 2026-10-07. Permits, safety advisories, the Kaziranga season and festival dates come from current news and official sources. Photos and map links are from Google Places, and photos are credited to their authors. Not checked yet: flights, prices, stays and exact drive times. Drive times here are approximate.

The short answer
Meghalaya, plus maybe two nights in Assam for the rhinos
Meghalaya is the one state that fits us perfectly: no permit, cool hill weather, the clearest river in India for snorkelling and kayaking, waterfalls you can swim under, caves to crawl through, and bridges grown from living tree roots. Most visitors are Indian, not foreign.
Assam is the gateway (we fly into Guwahati) and has Kaziranga, the best place in the world to see wild one-horned rhinos. It costs about 10 extra hours in the van over the week. That's the main decision; see the two week shapes below.
The other five states are out for this trip: four need special permits for foreigners, Manipur is unsafe, and the far ones take days to reach.
The northeast is almost a different country from the India we live in. It hangs off the rest of India by a narrow strip of land between Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh. The people are mostly tribal, with dozens of languages; many look more Southeast Asian than South Asian; and the hill states (Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram) are largely Christian. You see churches, not temples.
Meghalaya ("abode of the clouds") is home to the Khasi and Garo peoples, who are matrilineal: family names and property pass through the mother, and the youngest daughter inherits the house. Its Sohra plateau is one of the wettest places on Earth, which is why everything is green and full of waterfalls. Assam is the big, flat Brahmaputra valley: tea gardens, rice, rivers and wildlife.
Few foreign tourists come. Most visitors are Indian families on holiday, which is exactly the kind of place we like. Tourism infrastructure exists (homestays, drivers, cafés) but is simpler than in Goa or Kerala.
The seven states at a glance
For foreigners, permits are the first filter. Since December 2024, four of the seven need a Protected Area Permit (PAP).

Off the route. Not much for kids.
Water
The kids' number one. October is when the Umngot River turns glass-clear after the monsoon, and that season runs to April.
A small Khasi village on the clearest stretch of the Umngot. Snorkelling with masks over the river bed, kayaking, wooden boats, a swaying suspension bridge, and cliff jumps for the brave older kids. You can sleep in riverside tents or simple homestays. This is probably the best day of the week for the kids. Life jackets on: the current is real in places. 🦟 At dusk the riverbank is a mosquito problem.
The famous photo: wooden boats that seem to float on air because the water is so clear. It's on the Bangladesh border, crowded, and the boat ride itself is short. Do it from Shnongpdeng, 20 minutes upstream, where the water is just as clear and the crowds are not. October is the start of the clear-water season.
A waterfall into a turquoise pool you can swim in. Life jackets are handed out at the pool, and there's a short walk down on paved steps. One of the few waterfalls in Meghalaya that's genuinely swimmable for kids. About 1.5 hours from the Dawki side, so it's a day out from there or a stop on the way back to Shillong.
A big reservoir with islands, 30 minutes before Shillong on the road up from Guwahati. Pedal boats, kayaks and speedboats at the water-sports complex. Not a destination, but the right first stop to break the drive up the hill.
Root bridges & caves
The hands-on, scramble-through side of Meghalaya. Mostly around Sohra (Cherrapunji), 1.5 hours from Shillong.
The Khasi grow bridges from the roots of rubber-fig trees, trained across a stream over decades. This one is a 10-minute walk down from the road, so it works for the 6-year-old. It's also busy. Pairs naturally with Mawlynnong next door.
The famous two-level root bridge, with natural pools below for a swim. It's about 2,500–3,500 steep stone steps down and the same back up, a full morning or more. Fine for the 10–13s and fit adults, too much for the 6–7s. This is the natural split day: one group treks, the other does the caves.
A short, lit limestone cave with one route through it: squeeze, crouch and scramble for about 15 minutes. Kids love it. Busy at midday, so go early. Not for anyone claustrophobic.
Quieter than Mawsmai, reached by a paved forest path with valley views. Inside there are fossils of shells and fish in the rock walls, which is a better hook for kids than stalactites.
Views, villages & a museum
The famous sights. Some are worth it, some only for an hour. Each card says which.
India's tallest plunge waterfall, about 340 m, dropping into a green pool. Just after the monsoon is when it has the most water. You look at it from a viewpoint; it isn't a swim. Twenty minutes, and then on to the caves.
A grass ridge at the edge of a huge gorge, 45 minutes from Shillong, with almost no infrastructure. Walk the ridge with the kids, or go down the long stairway towards Rasong village if legs allow. Best early in the morning, before the clouds come up the valley.
Subhankar BiswasPintu GogoiNaela RizviAjijar Rahaman Molla
Famous as "Asia's cleanest village": bamboo bins on every path, flowers, a bamboo tree-house lookout towards Bangladesh. To be honest, it's a show village now, with entry fees and coachloads. Worth an hour combined with the Riwai root bridge, not more.
Seven floors on the cultures of all seven states: costumes, weapons, instruments, houses. It's the background on this page made physical, and a good rainy-morning plan. There's a skywalk on the roof with views over Shillong.
Animals: Kaziranga, Assam
Wild animals, seen from a jeep. It's the one "big attraction" here that earns its crowd: you won't see wild rhinos like this anywhere else.

Home to about two-thirds of the world's one-horned rhinos. You will almost certainly see rhinos, plus wild elephants, water buffalo, deer and big birds, from an open jeep in the tall grass. The 2026–27 season opened on 3 Oct (central Kohora and western Bagori ranges first). Jeep slots run 07:30–10:00 and 13:30–15:00. Skip the elephant-back safaris, which restart 1 Nov: captive working elephants. 🦟 Mosquitoes at dusk.
Hundreds of orchid species, a bamboo garden, local fish and rice varieties, and an Assamese cultural dance show in the afternoon. It fills the hours between the morning and afternoon safaris.
The other five sisters, and why not this time
They're worth knowing about. None of them fits a one-week trip with seven kids in October 2026.
Himalayan Buddhist monasteries and high passes, India's wildest state. Foreigners need a Protected Area Permit (PAP) through an approved tour operator, plus USD 30 per person. Tawang is roughly two days' drive from Guwahati each way over a pass above 4,000 m. A great trip for another time, with older kids and two weeks.
Naga tribal villages, Kohima and the Dzükou valley trek. The PAP requirement for foreigners was reinstated in December 2024. The big reason to go, the Hornbill Festival, runs 1–10 December.

Loktak and its floating grass islands are beautiful. But since 2023, Manipur has had an unresolved ethnic conflict. The US advises "Do Not Travel" and the UK advises against all but essential travel. A PAP is also required. Not with kids.
A hill capital built along ridges, very orderly and very remote. A PAP is required, and this month foreigners are being turned back because of confusion over the rules (EastMojo, 6 Oct 2026). Little payoff for kids in one week.

A royal water palace in a lake, the Ujjayanta Palace in Agartala, and ancient rock carvings at Unakoti. Interesting, but it's far south of the Meghalaya–Assam route, and it's palaces and temples rather than things for kids to do.
Two possible week shapes
17–25 Oct, flying both ways through Guwahati. Drive times are approximate and not yet verified. The question for the group: are the rhinos worth about 10 extra hours in the van?

How it splits: Kaziranga, Nohkalikai and the double-decker bridge are the big famous sights. Shnongpdeng, Laitlum and the caves are the small, local side. Both versions keep two activities a day and a break in the middle, but version B has three heavy driving days out of nine.
Compared with Kerala
Kerala (current plan)
Northeast (Meghalaya + Assam)
Getting there
Overnight train from Madgaon, then a 75-min nonstop flight home (≈170 NIS/person)
Connecting flights both ways, likely via Delhi, Bengaluru or Kolkata. Not priced yet: the biggest unknown, and probably the biggest cost difference.
Water
Backwaters by boat, beaches, Athirappilly (look, don't swim)
Snorkelling and kayaking in a glass-clear river, a swimmable waterfall
Animals
Wild tahr, elephants from the Periyar lake boat
Wild rhinos in Kaziranga (version B only)
Weather
Warm, with northeast-monsoon storms starting late October
Cool (≈15–24°C), mostly dry after the monsoon. Sohra can be foggy. Bring layers.
Vegetarian food
Easy everywhere
Easy in Assam and Shillong. Thin in Sohra and the river villages, where Khasi food is pork-heavy.
Festival crowds
Dussehra holiday 18–21 Oct, so Munnar and Thekkady are packed
Durga Puja 16–20 Oct, huge in Guwahati and Shillong. Great to see, hard to book.
How different it feels
Like Goa, greener
A different world: tribal cultures, churches, hill villages
Practical
Booking pressure
We're 10 days out, and the trip lands on Durga Puja (Vijaya Dashami is Tue 20 Oct), the biggest festival of the year in Guwahati and Shillong. Hotels and drivers for 13 people need to be booked this week if we go.
🦟 Mosquitoes & malaria
The Kaziranga grasslands and the riverbank at Shnongpdeng are bad at dusk. Parts of lowland Assam and Meghalaya carry malaria risk, so ask a doctor about prevention before going. Bring repellent, long sleeves and nets.
Getting around: one van with a driver
A 12–17-seat Tempo Traveller with a driver for the whole week, picked up at Guwahati airport. Hill roads are slow and winding, so bring travel-sickness tablets for the kids. Ask for rear seatbelts.
Money & signal
Bring cash for the villages. ATMs are in Shillong and Guwahati, and few anywhere else. Mobile data is patchy in Sohra and along the river, so download offline maps.
Not on this page, and why
Kaziranga elephant safaris: captive working elephants. They restart 1 Nov anyway.
Majuli (river island, mask-making workshops): wonderful for kids, but it adds a day each way by road and ferry. Another trip.
Tawang, Hornbill, Loktak: see "The other five sisters" above.
Permits: none for this route
Meghalaya and Assam need nothing beyond the Indian visa. Don't add a side trip into Arunachal, Nagaland, Manipur or Mizoram without a Protected Area Permit arranged in advance.
